How do I join the study?
You can join in two easy steps: 1) log on to
www.NHS3.org and 2) enter the login ID and password printed in your invitation letter.
What is involved in participating?
We won't send you pills to take or ask you to change anything about your lifestyle. As the study begins, we will ask you to complete one questionnaire online now and another one in about 6 months. Otherwise, we just ask you to live your life as you normally would and then tell us about it by completing subsequent questionnaires approximately every two years. Women who become pregnant will be invited to participate in a special sub-study about diet and lifestyle during pregnancy.
Where did you get my name?
We obtained names and addresses from state nursing registries. We do not share names, addresses, email addresses or ANY individual data with anyone. Your information is kept strictly confidential and is used only for medical statistical purposes. We are presently enrolling a sample of female RNs and LPNs between the ages of 22 and 42 in Florida, North Carolina and Illinois. We hope to begin enrolling over 100,000 additional nurse-participants later in 2008.
Are my answers safe? Who will have access to the data?
The security of your personal information is our highest priority and all procedures are reviewed by the Harvard-affiliated Partners Healthcare Institutional Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research. We keep your name and address in highly secured files, and all information that you provide is stored separately and identified by study ID only. We will never give your name and address or any personally identifiable information to anyone else. Our website uses encrypted transmission of data to ensure that your responses cannot be intercepted as they are sent to our computer servers.
What are you studying in Nurses’ Health Study III?
We are broadly investigating the factors that can improve the health and quality of life of women (and we are also conducting a parallel study among men, the Health Professional's Follow-up Study). A major focus is on nutritional factors, but physical activity and use of medications are also being investigated. As new issues arise, we are able to incorporate these into our study as well.
How long will the study continue?
We anticipate that this will be a long term study because we have learned that some of the effects of diet and other factors today may take many decades to be seen. The original Nurses' Health Study began in 1976 and is still going strong with more than 90% of those enrolled still actively participating!
I have an unusual medical history. Do you still want me to participate?
We hope everyone who is asked will participate. Based on the information provided, a few women who have already had a major illness may not be asked to complete later questionnaires.
What are the results of the existing Nurses’ Health Studies?
The existing Nurses' Healthy Studies have provided key information on literally hundreds of important topics, including results that have altered medical practice and national dietary guidelines. We invite you to visit our website at
www.NursesHealthStudy.org to view the extensive findings from our published papers.
Why is the study using online questionnaires?
We have had great success in conducting online questionnaires in Nurses' Health Study II. We hope that by making NHS III an all-web study, we can make it more convenient for today's busy nurses to participate.
What does it cost? Will I have to pay for anything?
You will not need to pay anything to participate. The information you provide will be an invaluable gift to other women worldwide and future generations.
How do I change my contact information?
What if I have a question not answered here?
If you are a study participant or just an interested member of the public and have a question about any of the Nurses' Health Study cohorts which we haven't answered here, please
send us an email and we'll do our best to answer it.
