Research Interests

Health Effects of Moderate Alcohol Consumption
Since the early 1980s, I have conducted research on the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption. The focus of most of this research has been on the "protective" association between moderate drinking and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction and stroke. My research includes both observational and interventional studies. Recent work has been based on several large epidemiologic cohorts, including the Physicians' Health Study , the Nurses' Health Studies , and the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study.

Asthma and COPD: Epidemiology and Emergency Management
My primary area of research is obstructive airway diseases. I am studying the causes of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in several large prospective cohorts: the Nurses' Health Study, the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study, and the Growing Up Today Study.

I also chair the Steering Committee of the Emergency Medicine Network (EMNet), a research collaboration involving 185 emergency departments. The network focuses on respiratory emergencies (via MARC) and public health interventions in the emergency department (via ED24). We have completed several prospective cohort studies, surveys, and clinical trials. For more information about EMNet, please visit www.emnet-usa.org.
